Artist: Jon Hunter
Modified Spring Reverberation, Flux, Scalpel Magnetic Disturbance. Electronic artist Jon Hunter performs Spring Reverb & Laptop turning microsounds into a cacophony.
He plays them similarly to stringed instruments by plucking strumming and stroking the springs but with addition of using scalpels to alter the pitch and timbre of the springs. This energy or “flux” caused by the movement of metal within a magnetic field is converted to audio signal, which is then altered with a Reaktor patch. The result is a controlled cacophony of thunderous sound.
Musically it sits somewhere between psychedelia and science fiction at its quietest it is like a gentle rain reminiscent of Rosy Parlane or Alvin Lucier’s Sferics recordings when it erupts it often does so abruptly with the force of Kenji Haino.

Artist: Pia van Gelder
SIGNAUX is 12 channel audio/video composition and performance for three new analog instruments, the Video Harp, Video Bell and Video Drum constructed by Pia van Gelder.
The synaesthetic instruments create an outcome that is both performative in its direct adaptation of pre-existing musical instruments with an absolute primitive approach to mixing media with crude and stripped back electronics that embrace broken, noisy and glitched outcomes.

Friday 1st October 5 – 6pm
Artist: Morgan McWaters
Electronic musician and design researcher Morgan McWaters discusses electronic instruments, why they’re covered in knobs and why it could be better if they weren’t.
We’ll look into how performers interact with their acoustic and electric instruments and the timbral and tonal control afforded by the smallest of gestures and why we as electronic musicians are disadvantaged by the need to think about the result we want before performing the action to create sound.

Artist Presentation
Project Presentation
Artists: Alice Lang, Daniel Tanner
Daniel Tanner (Sydney) and Alice Lang (Brisbane) are currently looking at new ways to develop immersive participatory work for festival environments.
As part of the Electrofringe festival, the artists will lead a critical discussion on their individual practices and latest work. Current working prototypes will be on show; audience participation will be encouraged. This show and tell / user feedback session features portable wearable devices that are capable of visually displaying the users pulse. The devices are also capable of communicating with a static mother sculpture, which will activate/ ‘breathe life’ into the satellite wearable.
Dan + Al’s ultimate goal is to establish a platform for all at a festival to be part of a mass un-choreographed performance: an organic mapping of the sites energy. The prototype will eventually be the blueprint for mass-produced one-size-fits-all wristbands robust enough to survive a 3-day music festival.
Themes/ topics of interest to the Electrofringe audience include:

Friday 1st October 1 – 2pm
Artist: Ben Byrne
Ben Byrne’s solo performances and new release Disposition explore the potential of noise, feedback and other incidental sounds produced with his setup, which includes signals, x/y pad, computer, mixer and other various electronics, and construct a visceral music that is improvised and gestural but at the same time just a little out of control.
The release and each of his performances explore his interest in the parallels between technological, musical and theoretical devices, eschewing conventional musicality and instead concentrating on the relationship between the musician and his equipment as it plays out in any given space while asking the audience to chart their own path as the music constantly emerges from and disappears into a mess of actions, signals and noise.
During this artist presentation he will give a performance and discuss his solo work at length as well as how it fits into his broader musical practice and relates to his other work as an artist, writer and curator before taking questions and encouraging discussion at the end of the session.
